The Saxby Family
Other people drawn to Marden to work on the Railway were the Station Masters. This was a job of some responsibility, and the Station Master would have been a person of some status in village society.
The first two station masters were both from Scotland. This may reflect the fact that the South Eastern was the first railway in the area, and so there was not a pool of experienced people to draw from locally. The fifth Station Master was Samuel Saxby, who originally came from Catsfield in Sussex.
He first appears in the census for Marden in 1881, living in the Station Master's House with his wife, Charlotte, and daughter Fanny. He served as Station Master in Marden for 27 years. This image shows his gravestone in Marden churchyard, which proudly displays his long service.
