Cholmondeley Room and Terrace

The Cholmondeley Room and Terrace is the largest private venue space we have available at our venue. The Cholmondeley Room is rich with original Charles Barry and Augustus Pugin designs, the architects of much of the Palace still standing today. making the room a Victorian style an adjoining Terrace are the largest venues available for hire in the House of Lords.

Have drinks in the Cholmondeley Room before moving out onto the Terrace for a sit-down lunch or dinner. Alternatively, the Terrace can be used for standing receptions or cocktail parties.

Throughout the Cholmondeley Room you can see royal coats of arms adorned on the walls from William the Conqueror to Queen Victoria.

The ornate wallpaper was designed by Augustus Pugin, who collaborated with Charles Barry to produce the gothic interior designs throughout the Palace of Westminster.

History

The Cholmondeley Room was named after George Horatio Charles Cholmondeley, the 5th Marquess of Cholmondeley, who was Lord Great Chamberlain when the room came into operation in June 1963.
The Cholmondeley Room, with its accompanying terrace, is the principal function room of the House of Lords. The room originally consisted of three book stores and corridors.
Access to the terrace was originally on the same level as the Cholmondeley Room. Now the terrace is several steps above the level of the room, due to the terrace being raised in the 1970s due to the risk of flooding from higher tides.
The wallpaper is of an original Pugin design and the chairs were designed by Viscount Linley.
